“Hispanizing maghrebis? The ‘Good Moroccan’ versus the ‘Bad Moroccan’. Images and Cultural Constructions of the Spanish Africanist League (1913–1931) Regarding the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco”
Abstract
This article presents how Spanish civilist colonialism, specifically the Spanish Africanist League (LAE), attempted to construct a vast project of intellectual, cultural, and educational modernization of the entire indigenous Moroccan population between 1913 and 1931, aiming to adapt them to Spanish religious and moral values. This adaptation actually sought to Spanishize Arabs, Berbers, and Jews, based on a reinvented and mythologized positive remembrance of what Al-Andalus represented during the Middle Ages. This was an extremely complicated objective, as its frustrated implementation was attempted within the framework of a complex situation marked by a liberal system in crisis, that of the Alfonsine Restoration, and a dictatorship, that of Primo de Rivera, which addressed the “Moroccan problem” not through civil means but through military means, a fact that greatly conditioned the objectives of the LAE which are presented and analyzed based on the publications África Española and Revista Hispano-Africana.References
