Portuguese participation in the European and African front during the First World War

Abstract
This article presents the participation of Portugal in two battle fronts during the First World War: the African one, in Mozambique, and the European one, in Flanders. The presence in Africa was understood and desired since Mozambique was a colony that had to be defended. However, the presence in the Belgian scenario was due to a political calculation by the Republican governments which hoped to win the support of the population for the new regime. The result in both battlefields was the same: the defeat of the armies and the irreplaceable loss of human beings and material resources.
