Abstract
In the second half of the 19th century the exploration of the unknown black Africa was at its peak. In the area of the Gulf of Guinea, the main European powers competed for the best territories. The convulsed Spain of the moment was absent from that race, maintaining a minimal naval presence in its territories of the Gulf of Guinea and without having occupied the continental part received from Portugal in 1778. However, thanks to the outstanding effort of the explorer Manuel Iradier, Spain managed to save what would later become Muni, the continental part of Spanish Guinea.
