Abstract
Under the name of the Malayan Emergency, British colonial power and the economic elites of the "Straits Settlements" camouflaged the communist insurgency that, between 1948 and 1960, sought to achieve independence and establish a socialist state in the territory of the British colonies in the Straits of Malacca. This article will describe how this conflict transcended this timeframe, through the repression of the leftist opposition in Singapore and the frustration of the union of Malaysia and Singapore in 1965. In reality, as we will show, the configuration of the Malaysian and Singaporean states is due to a combination of three social-historical factors: colonialism, socialism and ethnicism.
