Changes in colonial structure after the Great War: The cases of Togoland and Cameroon
Abstract
The end of the Great War brought about profound changes in the international system and in existing borders. This fact, which has usually focused on the European continent, also had its repercussions in Africa. The loss of the German colonies to Great Britain and France needs a profound review. In this case, the cases of Togoland and Cameroon are studied because they have common characteristics: the two territories were divided into areas of British and French control. The aim of this research is to analyze the changes in the colonial structure of the two protectorates and the reaction of the local population to the change during the period 1914-1932.
