The United States in the Philippines: the consequences of an occupation

Abstract

The victory over Spain in the 1898 war resulted in the United States acquiring a series of overseas territories that formed its nascent Empire. The need to pacify and control its new possessions, particularly in the Philippine archipelago, prompted a series of strategic and organizational changes that led to the creation of the modern American state. In this way, the U.S. colonial experience became a clear precedent for its subsequent development, not only at an institutional level but also through the debates and internal tensions that would arise from its emergence as a global power.
