Español An Unsuccessful Enterprise. Victor Emmanuell Leclerc ´s Expedition in Anglosaxon, French and Haitian Sources
Abstract
The paper aims to show new perspectives on the military expedition sent by Napoleon Bonaparte to Saint Domingue in 1802. It focuses on Anglo-Saxon sources not considered in the literature and confronts them with French and Haitian narratives. The article intends to show that the goal of the different accounts was to spread information among English spoken readers about the failed French expedition, to discuss the reasons of the failure to submit the colony again to the metropolitan authority. The paper sustains and looks to demonstrate that in many aspects the critique of the Anglo-Saxon observers is coincident with that of Haitian authors. Both were based on a strong anti – French position, while the critiques of the French authors focused on certain actors and strategies.References
