The Filipino Creoles and the 1896 Revolution: A Case Study
Abstract
This article analyzes the involvement of Philippine Creoles in the 1896 independence revolution through a case study: that of Francisco L. Roxas y Reyes and Pedro P. Roxas y Castro, two cousins from a family of Spanish origin that had been established in the Philippines for several generations. To analyze this case and contextualize it within late 19th-century Philippines, the article reviews the origins of the 1898 Philippine revolution; characterizes the family within the Filipino Creoles; and examines the lives, activities, and relationships of the two men in the society of their time, as well as their position on the revolution and the impact it had on their development.References
