Abstract

This article studies the role played by the Cantabrian journalist and literary Simón Bergaño y Villegas as editor and editor of the Gazeta de Guatemala between 1801 and 1807. It addresses its editorial line, the introduction of illustrated approaches in all orders within it, its connections foreign affairs and projection in New Spain and the Peninsula and the opposition of conservative sectors of Guatemalan society, including its prelate, which led first to an attempt to limit content and then to its suppression.
