Abstract
The Greek-Latin concept of “pueblo” ("the people") designates both the political community as a whole, and its most humble and poor sector. Starting from this polysemy, the paper analyses the origin of political institutions on which the public space is built. The opposition between public and private, articulated around the complex relationship between "domus" (the house) and "polis" (the city), constitutes the basis of the work. From an anthropological, etymological and political-theoretical perspective, the work reaches into the very remote sources of the construction of the West, while reflecting on the ethical and normative implications of such a construction.
