A New Teaching Innovation Technique: How to Learn about International Humanitarian Law through Text, Images and Sound

Abstract

The main objective of this teaching innovation and research work is to develop a guide which helps students learn about the basic components of international humanitarian law. It represents an approach to the rules and contents of this sector of international law that is highly relevant, also today in the context of certain conflicts such as the situation in Gaza. This is done by using visual, textual and sound methods through the combination of images that represent the reality of “the humanitarian” in armed conflicts. Also, an analytical methodology of the topics included by the international humanitarian law is used. Particularly it analyses subjects such as: the protection of civilians, vulnerable groups and methods and means of warfare, as well as the protection of cultural property. The tangible results of this educational research are reflected in simple but deep knowledge of the content of current international humanitarian law and the positive effects that this technique has had on students of the degrees and postgraduate courses of the University Rey Juan Carlos University of Madrid.
