Spain on the map during the Cold War: Palomares and the nuclear crisis

Abstract

On 17 January 1966, a US Air Force aircraft carrying four one-megaton thermonuclear bombs exploded in mid-air while refuelling with a KC-135 tanker aircraft from the Morón base (Seville). Its wreckage fell on the town of Palomares in Almería, triggering one of the most significant states of emergency of the Cold War. Operation Broken Arrow, launched when there was an accident involving the loss of a nuclear component, disrupted international relations. However, General Franco's dictatorial government tried to keep the fact that US aircraft loaded with nuclear bombs were flying over other countries a secret from the world and from public opinion. Spain was not a member of NATO and had few allies on the international stage, except for Washington's circumstantial support in its bloc policy, so its action and response to the threat were affected by this situation of isolation. This paper analyses the Palomares accident, its effect on Spanish national politics and the international context, attempting to answer the reasons why the Spanish government acted with secrecy and consent towards its partner.
