The architecture of Russian-Soviet military thought (19th–21st centuries): methodological continuity, conceptual consolidation and future prospects

Abstract

This article offers an interpretative framework for the architecture of the Russian Federation’s current military thought. In this interpretative framework, this architecture—far from constituting a succession of ideological breaks—is regarded as a cumulative system of knowledge: an Inherited Conglomerate. Methodological constants are identified through a qualitative analysis of primary doctrinal sources, texts from the General Staff Academy, works by theorists such as Suvorov, Lenin, Triandafillov, Isserson, Sokolovskii and Shchedrovitskii, contemporary studies in military analysis and current legislation. A heuristic model of the sedimentation of historical layers is proposed, in which the Tsarist era contributed the centrality of the human factor and military statistics; Leninism subordinated strategy to politics, using dialectical materialism as a method. In turn, the interwar Soviet period formalised operational art and deep operations; the Great Patriotic War institutionalised organisational learning and shaped collective identity; the Cold War introduced cybernetics and enhanced mathematisation; the post-Soviet era incorporates digital analytics and artificial intelligence. It is concluded that the current architecture can integrate all these layers into a complex system, geared towards managing one’s own and the adversary’s will, and seeks to move towards an increasingly automated conduct of conflict, anchored in ethical and pedagogical principles of Suvorovian origin with Leninist influences.
