Walled states in the 21st century
Abstract
The promises of globalization show cracks. One of the most significant is the increase in the construction of border walls, a total of 73 since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Some states have even walled themselves to deal with some of the challenges of this new global era.
In this work, after analyzing the problem of borders from the perspective of security and human rights in a globalized world, we study three walled states, Israel, China and India, with six, four and three walls, respectively, built on their borders. The construction of walls is a symbol of the 21st century, most of them are erected to stop the displacement of people.
