From medieval plans to contemporary reality: the carolingian medievalism of Campus Galli - Karolingische Klosterstadt
Abstract
In the contemporary pluralism of Art and Architecture, there is still a strand that seeks to [re]create and [re]construct the past using techniques from the Middle Ages. This artistic and architectural medievalism appropriates a methodology called experimental archeology, an endeavor to reproduce artifacts, using the same methods and resources that social groups originally had. Campus Galli - Karolingische Klosterstadt in Meßkirch, Germany, can be considered an example of this communion between art, architecture and experimental archaeology, but it also represents an important materiality of the idealized attraction of contemporaneity for the medieval period. By using methods and techniques of anthropological investigation – ethnographic –, mainly observant participation, this article aims to investigate, through experience and practice, the peculiarities of this archaeological [re]construction of the Carolingian medieval past.References
