A song of violence and orientalism: representations of Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones (2011)

Abstract

This article’s main objective is to analyze the aspects presented by the character Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones TV series (2011-2019), aiming at the relationship between cinematographic construction and the historical reality of medieval society. The research emphasizes how women were usually depicted in this period of time, and also the way in which cinematographic production represents the daily gender relations of the aristocracy in the Middle Ages. Mainly concerned with the first episode of the series, it was possible to examine the way in which the character in question presents herself in an environment made up of men in positions of power, and how she faces this system that is so exclusionary and violent towards women.
