Neomedieval cochambrança: Ariano Suassuna’s anti-colonialism and conservatism

Abstract

This article deals with the concept of neomedievalism and its applicability to a text by Ariano Suassuna. First, I demonstrate part of the debate on the choice between the concepts of medievalism and neomedievalism defending both the historicity of the latter and the decolonial perspective within the specific field of Latin American neomedievalism. I then demonstrate the practical application of the above ideas in an analysis of the text As Cochambranças de Quaderna, a play written in 1987 by the writer Ariano Suassuna, a native of the state of Paraíba.
