Magic and power in Disney villains: dominance and transformation
Abstract
This paper presents a comparative analysis of the nature and function of magic in the Evil Queen (cinematographic versions of 1937 and 2025 of Snow White) and Maleficent (the 1959 film version of Sleeping Beauty and the 2014 and 2019 Maleficent films). The central argument is that, while both characters personify evil, the Evil Queen’s magic acts as a static, external instrument of control, exclusively serving to impose her tyranny. Maleficent’s magic, however, is presented as a reactive and emotional force rooted in her personal history. By aligning with current retellings that explore the origins of the villains, this analysis demonstrates the evolution of the archetype: the Evil Queen uses magic for structural domination, whereas Maleficent employs it as an engine for internal transformation and the overcoming of trauma, thereby revealing the complexity of the antagonistic character.References
