East of the Holy See: the representation of otherness in a medieval fantasy manga. The case of Kushan in Kentaro Miura's Berserk (1989-)

Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze the representational and narrative strategies employed by Miura in his characterization of the Kushan Empire. To this end, the appropriation and reinterpretation of various non-Western elements are analyzed. Once integrated, these influences enrich the setting by adding complementary perspectives, based on the construction of an orientalized “Other”. Aspects such as the religiosity of the Kushan Empire, its architecture or inhabitants, among others, are examined, leading to the conclusion that the medieval universe of Berserk, predominantly inspired by Christian Europe, is deepened and diversified by the Otherness embodied by Ganishka's Empire.
